The purpose of wearing a face covering in a controlled environment is to prevent contaminants from entering the space through a person's nose or mouth. However, improper use of masks increases the risk of transmission rather than minimizing it.

Therefore, it is crucial to know how to properly use and breathe a mask. Here are 4 important guidelines to follow:

Start and end with proper hygiene. To avoid the risk of contamination, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before putting on the mask. If soap is not available, use an alcohol-based sanitizer. If you feel the mask is contaminated at any point during use, please leave the room and remove it. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly again after touching before putting on the new one.
Cover your mouth and nose. A proper mask will cover your nose and mouth, not just your mouth.
Check for leaks. After attaching the mask to your mouth and nose, check the sides to make sure no air is escaping. In some cases, you can fit the mask to your face.
Breathe in the right way. The proper way to breathe with a mask is to inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. When you inhale, the hair in your nose traps the particles and protects you from the risk of particles entering your lungs, just as you would inhale through your mouth. Exhaling through your mouth allows you to release air quickly and comfortably.
